Many people take swimming for granted, but it is actually an incredible workout. It gives you a whole-body workout, working the muscles of your arms, legs, back, shoulders, chest and core. It also burns calories at a very high rate, provides a good cardio workout, and builds endurance and stamina. All of this while putting very little strain on your joints and tendons.
Walking in the water, like swimming, requires no extra equipment and can give you a great workout. The extra drag of the water helps to burn calories and build muscles and stamina. It provides a significantly better workout than walking on dry land and reduces wear and tear on your knees, ankles, feet and back. This type of exercise is particularly good for those who have had knee or hip surgery. For a great cardio workout, you can also try water running.
There is no need for an expensive and cumbersome water bike to accomplish water bicycling —a couple of water noodles will do the trick. Simply wrap the noodles around your back, using the ends to support your arms, lean back and begin making a pedaling motion. This can either be an endurance exercise or cardio, or both, depending on how quickly your pedal and how long you keep doing it.
